The fifth graders at Riverview School took an “incredible journey” to the Westosha Veterinary Hospital in Silver Lake on Oct. 18. The students delivered many donations for the Safe Harbor Humane Society in Kenosha. Westosha Veterinary served as a drop-off site, and Safe Harbor then picked up the items. Afterwards, the students had the chance to ask questions about the important work that the veterinarians do at the hospital. The fifth graders participated in this service-learning activity after reading the book The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford. In the book, two dogs and a cat go on an adventure in the Canadian wilderness to find their owners. If you would still like to make a donation, the Safe Harbor Humane Society is in need of:

  • Washable cat and dog toys.
  • Cat and dog food (wet and dry).
  • Scrub sets.
  • Small animal and bird cages.
  • Carriers and crates.
  • Non-clumping, inexpensive cat litter.
  • Copy paper (8 ½ x 11) white and colored.
  • Letter-size manila file folders.
  • Two-pocket colored folders.
