UW Extension hosting new workshop series for small businesses and farmers

UWEXLogo-webBeginning Dec. 4, the UW-Cooperative Extension offices in Kenosha, Racine and Walworth Counties in cooperation with the UW Center for Dairy Profitability and Annie’s Project are sponsoring What Every Small Business Should Know workshop series for small business owners and farmers. The series of four workshops will be held on Wednesdays, December 4, January 22, February 12 and Thursday, March 13 at the Walworth County Government Center in Elkhorn. This series is for owners of manufacturing firms, main street businesses and farmers dealing with self-employment and management issues.

The What Every Small Business Should Know series workshops:

Dec. 4, 2013, 9:30 am– 12:30 pm: What does the Affordable Care Act Mean for You? Learn about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and what it means for you, your family and your employees. Learn about the laws already in effect, what goes into effect in 2014 and how you can shop for insurance through the federal health insurance exchange. This series will also help you think through how many full time employees you have and what that number means for your business beginning in 2015. Speaker: Heidi Johnson, Dane County UWEX Crops and Soils Educator.

Jan. 22, 2014, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm: Retirement Planning for the Self-Employed. This workshop will include strategies for qualified and nonqualified retirement plan options including 401ks, Roth 401ks, IRAs (traditional and Roth), profit sharing plans and executive deferred comp plans. It will also cover plans for businesses with employees and those without. Speaker: W. Ryan Zenk, JD, CFP ®, Family Wealth Advisors, LLC

Feb. 12, 2014, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm: Exiting Gracefully: Business Successions and Exits. Even though many small business owners plan to work until their final days, this is not the reality for most. How can you start planning now to exit gracefully, turn the reins over to the next generation of managers and shift gears to a slower pace but still feel productive in your later years. Speakers: Joy Kirkpatrick, UW Center for Dairy Profitability & Martin Grosse, WDATCP Farm Center.

March 13, 11:30 am – 2:30 pm: Tech Tools for Business. This workshop will provide the latest in information technology tools, internet security and great productivity pointers for incorporating technology into your business. Speaker: Dennis Deery, Irish Rose Consulting

The cost of each workshop is $15/participant, which provides materials, speakers and a light lunch. If you register for all four workshops by Dec. 2, the total fee will be $50, a $10 savings.
