State Rep. Samantha Kerkman, whose district includes most of Western Kenosha County, has issued a statement supporting the opening of  Menominee Tribe casino in Kenosha just east of  I-94 on the site of the closed Dairyland Greyhound Park.

In the statement, Kerkman lauds the impact of the casino for jobs and says she will be sharing with Gov. Scott Walker the support of local officials and residents for the casino.

The full statement:

The Menominee casino for Kenosha is a winning opportunity for Kenosha County and southeastern Wisconsin. What I’ve heard over the years and what two referendums – including a county-wide referendum in 2004 – have demonstrated, is support for this opportunity. In the days since the Federal approval, I have reached out to the communities and the constituents whose voices I represent, and they are why I support the Kenosha casino and whose thoughts and comments I will be sharing with the Governor. With an expected 1,400 related construction jobs and 3,300 post-project completion jobs hanging in the balance, now is the time for bipartisanship and to work together to bring consensus among the tribes. It has been a long process with an expected $19 million for local governments and schools, and $35 million in state revenues to gain. I’m hopeful after the 60-day comment period that the Governor will quickly allow this project to spread its winning impact to Kenosha County and beyond. “

Last week, the casino project passed the important milestone of approval by the US Interior Department. The final step would be approval by Gov. Walker.
