Department of Natural Resources officials, a team of divers and a towing company removed an SUV from Camp Lake, where it had been since breaking through ice this winter.

The SUV was just under the surface of the water and was a hazard to boat traffic, said town Supervisor Dennis Faber at a  recent Town Board meeting. Two buoys had marked where the vehicle was just under the water.

Bystanders to today’s work said it began about 11:30 a.m. By 2 p.m., it appeared divers had attached a cable to the vehicle to begin the towing out process. The vehicle was out of the lake when I arrived at about 4:45 p.m.

At about 2:50 p.m., Salem Fire Rescue responded to the Camp Lake boat launch on the east side of the lake for a decontaminating hosing off.

Here is a video by Brian Cardarella of the last few feet of dragging the vehicle out of the lake at the fire lane off of 106th Place.

Here are some photos Brian Cardarella took of the process:

  1. Thanks to Jennifer Neimeyer says:

This was a DNR effort. Totally!
They gave the owner plenty of time to get the vehicle out, even an extension over the 30 days allowed.
    Thank you Jennifer! You Rock!

  2. Curious says:

Sure looks like someone dropped the ball on this one. Why was the vehicle in the water so long, leaking gas, oil and other contaminates. I thought it was the law to get any vehicle out of lakes and rivers, that go through the ice or any other time, immediatly to prevent contamination. I also thought there was a fine per day that you didn’t remove it from the DNR. Someone needs to investigate this.

  3. Ball not dropped says:

The ball was not dropped. There are steps that need to be taken before the state and the DNR will step in to take over. There are fines for this that will be levied and I’m sure that is still being decided. They are way ahead of your insight to “investigate this”.
