Stepped up mandatory safety belt law enforcement to begin Monday

kcsd-and-slpd-doors-combinedLocal law enforcement agencies will be among those participating in the  Wisconsin’s annual Click It or Ticket mobilization from May 20 to June 2.

The Silver Lake Police Department and the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department have announced they will be intensifying their enforcement of Wisconsin’s mandatory safety belt law during that time.

“Our officers will be on the lookout day and night for unbuckled motorists,” said Silver Lake Police Chief Dan Kingsley. “If you’re not wearing a safety belt, we will stop your vehicle and you will get a ticket.”

In all too many fatal crashes, the drivers and passengers are ejected from their vehicle because they were not buckled up. That’s why the Sheriff’s Department is serious about safety belt enforcement.

“To save lives and prevent injuries, our officers will stop a vehicle and issue tickets whenever they see an unbuckled driver or passenger” Sheriff David Beth said. “Our goal during Click It or Ticket and throughout the year is not to write more tickets, but to encourage safety compliance.” Through enforcement and education, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department is trying to convince everyone to buckle up voluntarily so that  to reduce the number of preventable traffic deaths in Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin, approximately one out of five motorists does not buckle up, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. More than half of the drivers and passengers killed in Wisconsin traffic crashes in 2011 were not wearing safety belts. Last year, there were more than 100,000 convictions for failure to fasten a seat belt.

I think it should be a requirement that motorcyclists wear helmets as well! Think of how many lives that may save.
