Salem passes tax levy with 0% increase for fourth straight year

The Salem Town Board approved a property tax levy with a 0 percent increase for the fourth straight year at a special board meeting Monday night.

The 2013 levy will be $3,419,470, as it has been since 2010.

The levy was part of a budget approved unanimously by the board at the special Town Board meeting. The levy earlier was approved by a unanimous vote of electors (residents) at a meeting before the special Town Board meeting. About 30 residents attended that meeting.

Expenditures for all funds in the budget are decreasing $15,617. Sewer utility rates will remain the same.

The board meeting also included approving a 3-year lease on five pickup trucks. Four of the vehicles will go to the highway department and one to the fire department. The new vehicles will replace the oldest vehicles in the fleet and then other vehicles shifted around as appropriate, explained Mike Murdock, Highway Department supervisor. At the end of the lease period, the town will pay $1 each to own the vehicles.

In the electors meeting, two residents spoke about the budget:

  • Chris Skryznecki asked for more information about the vehicles lease.
  • John Roberts asked about the trails project fund. He said he was a bicycle rider and if improvements to the town trail system are planned. Town administrator Patrick Casey replied that the approximately $215,000 fund balance is not enough to do much with new trail development, but the town is expecting to spend some of the fund on repair of existing trails in 2013. In the meantime, the town will keep its eyes open for grant opportunities, Casey said.
