Habitat for Humanity of Kenosha to hold orientation meeting in Salem Oct. 30

The Habitat for Humanity of Kenosha (HFHK) Family Selection Committee will hold its second Homeownership Program Orientation Meetings at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the Salem Community Library at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Curtis Strange Elementary School in Kenosha.

Each orientation meeting will provide background information about Habitat for Humanity and the criteria used to select a recipient of a Habitat for Humanity home. Attendance at one of the meetings is required in order to receive an application and to be eligible for selection. Criteria include the applicant’s need, ability to pay, and willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity in building the applicant’s home and other homes. Income limitations for the program are based on median income in the Kenosha area. To be eligible, an applicant’s income cannot exceed 60% of the median income in the Kenosha area, with adjustment for household size. As such, an applicant’s income may not exceed $29,820 for a one-person household up to a limit of $59,280 for an eight-person household. The selected applicant must perform at least 300 hours of sweat equity hours by assisting with construction of HFHK homes and by attending workshops and seminars regarding home financing, home maintenance and financial literacy. Upon completion of the house, HFHK will sell the home to the selected applicant. The homeowner will then be required to repay an interest-free mortgage loan to HFHK for the cost of the house. The selected applicant must also contribute toward closing costs.

Incorporated earlier this year, HFHK is the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit Christian housing ministry whose mission is to work with low-income families and assist them in purchasing a home. Applicants must live in or be willing to relocate to Kenosha County. The sites for the initial HFHK homes have not yet been finalized.

HFHK is also seeking volunteers and donors who would be willing to assist. Applicants, volunteers and donors may call 262-925-0360, email: family.kenosha@gmail.com, or visit the HFHK office at 6203 28th Ave, Kenosha, for more information.

I am interested in volunteering for your organization! I don’t have a backround in a trade, but I am interested in helping build a house/helping others! If you would send me information of where you’re location will be, or other things I need to know, that would be great!

    Thank You!
