A crash between two snowmobiles Sunday on the Fox River sent an Illinois man to the hospital via medical transport helicopter.

David J. Tahaney, 46, of Round Lake, Ill., was transported from the scene by Flight for Life to an Illinois hospital due to the extent of his injuries.

The incident took place on the frozen river just south of the 313th Avenue and 77th Street intersection, Salem, at about 5:55 p.m.

According to a Sheriff’s Department report, Tahaney was riding a snowmobile on the river as part of a group of about 10 riders when he locked the ski of his snowmobile with the ski of another, throwing Tahaney from his vehicle.

The group had been at a tavern up the river and were heading to Antioch.

The driver of the other snowmobile was not injured.

After investigation at the scene and interviewing by a deputy, Tahaney was given a citation for operating a snowmobile while intoxicated. Tahaney refused to submit to a blood test and also was issued a citation for refusing to take the blood test for OWI.
