An upcoming conference exploring the role of women in farming is open to residents of Kenosha County.

The Heart of the Farm – Women in Agriculture conference will be Thursday, Jan. 27 at the Jefferson County UW-Extension, 864 Collins Road, Jefferson. The conference begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.

Heart of the Farm- Women in Agriculture workshop series is a University of Wisconsin-Extension program that is committed to addressing the needs of farm women by providing education on farm business topics, connecting them with agricultural resources and creating support networks.

Topics for the Jefferson County workshop include:

  • Finding your voice for agriculture. Mariah Hadler, Busy Barns Adventure Farm, Tina Hinchley, Hinchley’s Dairy Farm Tours, and Maria McGinnis, UW Madison CALS Career Services, will discuss the value of communicating agriculture to non-ag audiences. They will share their expertise and give participants ideas on how they can find their own voice for agriculture, including the use of social media.
  • Ask the Vet. Rob Farruggio and Marjorie from the Jefferson Vet Clinic will answer your questions. Having trouble with your calves? Is your milking herd having feet problems? Find out the answers to these and pose your own questions.
  • All about insurance. Paul Mitchell, professor of agricultural applied economics.  Mitchell will provide insurance information for all types and sizes of farms – from large cropping farms to direct marketing operations.
  • Through the stress and Haze – Fostering Caring Communication in Farm Families. Roger Williams, consultant/mediator and professor emeritus UW-Madison/Extension. Williams will discuss signs of stress, communication skills for stressful situations, conflict management styles and guidelines for farm families.

The cost of the workshop is $15 for preregistration and $20 at the door. To register, send payment to Heidi Johnson, 864 Collins Rd., Jefferson, WI, 53549. Make checks payable to the UW-Extension. Visit the Heart of the Farm website www.uwex.edu/ces/heartofthefarm to download a brochure.

Heart of the Farm – Women in Agriculture is sponsored at the state level by the UW Center for Dairy Profitability and is partially funded by a USDA Risk Management Agency grant and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board.
