One person died in a crash in Paris involving an inmate transport van late last night.

The van was occupied by 10 male inmate workers from the state correctional facility in Kenosha.

The crash occurred at the 12900 block of Highway 142 at around 10:30 p.m. The workers were traveling from the Kenosha Correctional Center, 6353 14th Ave.,  to their usual work site for third shift. Preliminary information indicates that the van was westbound on Highway 142, west of I-94. The van apparently veered off the road, over corrected, and rolled. Some of the passengers were ejected from the vehicle, said Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Gil Benn.

One of the ejected passengers died at the scene, Benn said. Two other occupants sustained life threatening injuries and were flown to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatrosa. Seven others sustained various injuries and were transported to Kenosha Medical Center, Aurora Medical Center and St. Catherine’s Medical Center. Two helicopters and eight rescue squads responded to the scene.

The deceased is a 24-year-old male from Oak Creek. His identity is being withheld until family can be notified, Benn said.

This accident remains under investigation, however deputies are looking into the possibility the driver may have been trying to avoid an animal in the road.

Earlier reporting from last night is here.
